Corporate Gift: How to Choose a Memorable and Tax-Free Business Gift? (2026)
A memorable corporate gift fits its recipient; tax treatment depends on purpose, recipient and value. In Estonia, a price below €21 does not make every business gift exempt from every tax. This guide helps an Estonian business plan product selection and the full budget. Tax information was checked on 5 September 2026. Businesses elsewhere must apply their own jurisdiction's rules.

Start with the recipient and a clear reason
Decide whether you are thanking a client, promoting your business at an exhibition or giving something to an employee. This affects both product choice and accounting. Record the number of recipients, likely use, handover date and total project budget. A catalogue unit price is only one part of the decision.
A client gift should suit the person's routine. At an event, portability matters; a partner thank-you may call for a personal note and understated branding. Check the recipient organisation's gift policy before selecting an expensive item. Assess usefulness and feedback rather than assuming a guaranteed increase in sales.
Estonian promotional gift tax rules
The Estonian Tax and Customs Board's promotional gift guidance sets an income-tax exemption of up to €21 excluding VAT for qualifying advertising gifts. Above the threshold, the whole gift value is taxable, not just the excess. Items handed over together as a gift set are assessed together. Taxable gifts use the 22/78 income-tax rate and TSD Annex 5. The guidance treats logo-printing expenditure as a separate business expense.
VAT requires a separate check. The Board's VAT guidance uses a €10 threshold excluding VAT for promotional gifts. A VAT-registered business that deducted input VAT may owe output VAT on free transfers above that threshold even where the gift is exempt from income tax. Logo application may form part of the goods' VAT value. Do not automatically transfer the income-tax cost distinction to VAT.
An employee gift cannot automatically be treated as a promotional gift to a client. Review the Estonian fringe-benefit rules with your accountant. These official links are in Estonian; the jurisdiction remains Estonia regardless of this article's language.
Three questions before comparing prices
- What is the purpose? Explain the campaign, recipient group and connection to advertising. A logo alone is not a substitute for documenting the transaction.
- One item or a set? Identify everything handed over together. Do not budget a separate allowance for each component of one gift set.
- Which costs are additional? Request separate lines for goods, logo work, setup, packaging, assembly and delivery. Have the accountant assess the actual quotation before approval.
Five products to consider
These are comparison ideas, not promises of a tax-free final price. Colour, availability, minimum quantity and price can change. Confirm product suitability and the complete quotation.
- Skribo pen and notebook set suits someone taking notes in meetings. Assess the gift set as a whole and check the cover branding area and packaging dimensions.
- Aluminium stylus pen is compact for training or client meetings. Confirm the colour revealed by engraving and avoid excessively fine names or contact details.
- SPOT 500 ml bottle carries an everyday drink. This single-wall model is not a thermos; lid convenience and cleaning matter alongside branding.
- LOJA cotton bag can carry event materials or contain a lightweight gift. Compare dimensions with contents and confirm print space. Adding it to a set also affects the set assessment.
- Parker Urban ballpoint pen is a metal writing instrument in a gift box for a personal partner thank-you. It need not meet the promotional exemption: budget any applicable tax deliberately.
Compare the relevant product groups
For larger events, compare writing instruments and shopping bags. For daily use, consider thermal mugs and water bottles. Check connections and charging output for a power bank, and dimensions and comfort for a backpack.
Within the environmentally conscious gift selection, ask for documented material composition and certification scope. A product name cannot describe its whole environmental impact. Completed projects help compare designs, while the product selection helps build a shortlist.
Agree the decoration before approving artwork
Engraving may suit metal, with the appearance depending on coating and material. Compare screen printing for simpler designs on suitable surfaces. Pad printing can suit smaller hard products, while UV printing may suit multicolour designs on compatible accessible surfaces.
Provide vector artwork and inspect the proof at its final size. Confirm placement, contrast, personal names and care requirements. Ask about a sample where needed. The services overview supports comparison; the final method depends on the exact item.

Frequently asked questions
Is every corporate gift below €21 tax-free?
No. Purpose and recipient must meet the applicable rules, and VAT needs a separate assessment. Employee gifts cannot automatically use the promotional gift exception.
Is choosing a more expensive gift a mistake?
Not necessarily. If it fits the recipient and purpose, include tax and other costs from the start. An unsuitable inexpensive item can remain unused despite its low price.
What should the enquiry include?
Recipient type, quantity, product link or use case, total budget, artwork, delivery location and latest arrival date. Explain whether items are separate gifts or one set. Send an enquiry to Logotrade or explore the corporate gift selection.
