In December, many companies face the same question: what should we give the team so that the gift feels like genuine thanks rather than a formality? Well-chosen Christmas gifts for employees show that the employer knows its people, values their contribution and has picked something that will still be used after the holidays. In this guide you will find ideas for different budgets, advice on placing your logo and an overview of how a Christmas gift to an employee is taxed in Estonia.

Thoughtful employee gifts do not have to be expensive. What matters more is that the gift fits the recipient's everyday life, is of good quality and carries a personal message.

What employees expect from a Christmas gift

The gifts people appreciate most are usually practical and well made. A vacuum flask that really keeps coffee hot, a soft blanket for the sofa or a well-fitting sweatshirt will be used. A thin, uncomfortable or random item, on the other hand, ends up in a drawer and does not leave a good impression of the employer. That is why, before choosing, it is worth thinking about your team's working habits: do people drive a lot, work outdoors, spend most of the day at a computer or work largely from home?

Secondly, people expect a personal touch. This does not necessarily mean a product with their name on it – often a hand-signed card, a few words of thanks from the manager or a gift linked to the team's shared year or the company's story is enough.

Thirdly, the branding has to be tasteful. Employees do not want to use something at home that looks like an advertising billboard. The company logo can and should be there, but it should support the gift rather than overshadow it.

How to choose: five steps

A good employee gift is usually the result of a simple process. The following steps will help you decide faster and with more confidence:

  1. Define the purpose. Do you want to say thank you for the year, celebrate a company anniversary or strengthen team spirit? The purpose shapes both the product and the message.
  2. Set the budget including taxes. Besides the product price, take into account branding, packaging, delivery and fringe benefit tax.
  3. Know your recipients. A short survey on preferences or sizes saves a lot of trouble later.
  4. Choose the product and branding together. The same logo can look very different on different materials, so ask for a sample or a design preview if needed.
  5. Plan the hand-over. Decide whether the gifts will be handed out at the Christmas party, sent to people's homes or distributed at the office, and add a personal card.

Ideas by budget

Before selecting products, set a budget per employee and consider whether everyone receives the same gift or whether certain roles or long-service milestones get a separate solution. You can find inspiration in our Christmas gift selection, which brings together products suited to the season.

A small thank-you

  • a quality thermal mug or water bottle with discreet engraving;
  • a warm hat or scarf in company colours;
  • a notebook and pen in a matching design;
  • sweets or tea in attractive packaging;
  • a small tech accessory, such as a cable set or a wireless charger.

A mid-range budget

  • a vacuum flask with mugs;
  • a soft sweatshirt or fleece jacket with small embroidery;
  • a blanket for cosy evenings;
  • a gift set combining two or three items that go well together;
  • a gift made in Estonia that supports a local producer.

A premium gift

  • quality headphones or a speaker;
  • a bag made of leather or another premium material;
  • designer homeware or a quality drinks set;
  • a personal gift box with several carefully chosen products;
  • a special edition with name engraving for long-serving employees.

Higher-budget solutions can be found in the premium corporate gifts category. You can browse the full range in our product catalogue.

Warm and cosy gifts

The Estonian winter is long and dark, so many people appreciate a gift that brings warmth and comfort. Hats, scarves, gloves, blankets and slippers are things that get used every day until spring. Textile products are also a good choice for employee gifts because they suit the office, the home and the outdoors alike.

Sauna accessories are another popular gift idea in Estonia: a sauna hat, a towel or a bath sheet. They work well for companies whose team goes to the sauna together or organises winter days. With textiles, remember that sizes must be collected before ordering.

A cosy gift works especially well when it is put together as a set. For example, a blanket with a flask and tea, a hat with a scarf or slippers with a sauna towel create a complete experience associated with the holidays, rest and care. A gift like this tells the employee that their wellbeing matters to the employer outside working hours too.

A discreet logo – a gift, not a uniform

A Christmas gift is not workwear. If the logo is too large or too colourful, the employee feels more like an advertising carrier and may not use the item in their free time. A small, refined marking is a good solution:

  • embroidery on textiles, for example tone-on-tone on the chest or sleeve;
  • laser engraving on metal, wood or glass;
  • blind embossing or debossing on leather and covers;
  • the logo only on the packaging or card, while the product itself stays neutral.

Our logo application services help you choose the right technique – we take into account the product material, the details of the logo and how heavily the item will be used.

Do not underestimate the packaging either. A gift box in a matching design, a ribbon in company colours or a carefully designed card create a festive feeling even when the product itself is simple. This way the logo can be visible on the packaging, while the gift remains a personal item for the employee that is easy to use outside work as well.

Taxes: an employee gift is a fringe benefit

Many employers assume that the tax-free limit for promotional gifts also applies to employees. In Estonia, however, the situation is different. According to the Estonian Tax and Customs Board, a gift given to an employee because of the employment relationship is a fringe benefit within the meaning of § 48 of the Income Tax Act and is declared in annex 4 of the TSD form.

On a fringe benefit, the employer pays income tax at a rate of 22/78 and social tax of 33%. The 21-euro limit is intended for promotional gifts, not for employee gifts, so it cannot be relied on for employees. You can also read more about the concept of employee benefits on Wikipedia.

Include the tax cost in the budget right from the start and confirm the specific solution with your accountant. That way there will be no unpleasant surprises at the end of December.

Remote workers and different locations

If your team works in different towns or from home, it is worth thinking about logistics at the very start of planning. Gifts can be packed individually and sent directly to employees' homes or offices across Estonia. To do this, collect addresses and contact details in good time, keeping data protection requirements in mind.

For remote employees, a personal card is especially important. If they miss the shared Christmas party, the card and a carefully wrapped gift are what carry the employer's thanks.

In a company with several locations, decide whether everyone gets exactly the same gift. A uniform solution builds team spirit, but sometimes it makes sense to take local conditions into account – for example, warm textiles suit field staff, while office staff may prefer quality drinkware or something for the desk. The key is that all gifts are of equal value and nobody feels left out.

Timeline

The pre-Christmas period is the busiest time in gift production. The earlier you decide, the more choice you have in products, colours and branding techniques. Always ask for the production and delivery time in the quote and leave time for writing cards and handing out the gifts. Take a look at our previous work to get ideas from earlier projects.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Christmas gift to an employee taxable?

Yes. In Estonia, a gift given to an employee because of the employment relationship is a fringe benefit on which income tax and social tax are paid. The 21-euro promotional gift limit does not apply to employee gifts.

Can each employee's name be added to the gift?

Yes, this is possible, for example with engraving or embroidery. A personalised gift requires a name list and careful checking, so please send the details together with your order.

What if employees need different sizes?

Collect the sizes before ordering, for example with a simple survey. If that is not possible, choose one-size products such as a scarf, hat or blanket.

Can the gifts also be packed and delivered?

Ask about packing and delivery options in the quote – describe whether you want the gifts delivered to one place or to several addresses.
